Now that Nokia very soon Microsoft heard a great future as a hardware manufacturer is probably off the table. However, in terms of software, the Finns still have valuable know-how, which is reflected in particular in its map service HERE (formerly Smart2Go, Ovi Maps and Nokia Maps). One of several aspects that distinguish him, is the full offline availability of the material.
How PhoneArena has discovered Nokia currently investigating via LinkedIn for software developers that will develop, among other "advanced location-based service apps for Android and iOS." Even the name HERE falls explicitly in one of the requests.
It would not be inconceivable that Nokia could try now to establish stronger as a software company, and HERE would not be a bad starting point. For the pseudo-Android-Smartphone Nokia X the map service is already available, in other words, the basic step towards Android port is already gone (especially since it is a less successful version of Android was in the past). Let's hope that more will follow, as a real alternative to Google Maps one is looking so far in vain. Not that this necessarily requires. But competition is good known to the business.
